As a full-service geophysical company, Shearwater has the personnel, expertise and software to optimize acquisition parameters for our clients. In our SHarp Broadband overview we introduce basic acquisition parameters that control frequency content in our data: streamer depth profile and source depth.  We also provide a variety of advanced parameters, including:

These parameters control the fold and crossline sampling in the field and impact signal to noise levels at the target.  Together with the important input from clients on geologic characteristics from the survey area like dip, velocity, impedance, attenuation, and target depth; we also need information about the type of target, for instance structural versus stratigraphic plays.  

Where available we base our survey design and parameter testing on legacy seismic and well data.  We augment the legacy data as needed with synthetic data.  In addition to looking at frequency, dip, velocity and fold at the target, we can model illumination, attenuation, the impact of lithology on attributes like AVO and AVA.  We can also evaluate the impact of different imaging solutions, and the treatment of multiples.

To carry out this analysis, we use an advanced tool kit of in-house software and third party packages that include everything from source modelling through signal processing, ray-tracing and model building, as well as our full suite of processing tools.

Our survey design takes a holistic approach where we look not just at the selection of acquisition parameters, but how the resulting data will fit into a final processing flow and the quality of the resulting images. Parameters are optimized both geophysically and commercially by factoring in acquisition and processing costs. Where it is available oceanographic and meteorological data can be added to the analysis, for example to evaluate the impact of high currents on expected coverage and the possible use of acquisition techniques like streamer fanning and feather matching. We can include FlexiSource acquisition in the design, where we evaluate signal to noise, shotpoint overlap, de-blending, and the trade-off between crossline sampling and fold.
