Shearwater and atNorth Win HPCwire Readers’ Choice Award
28 Nov 2024
Shearwater and atNorth have teamed up to enable better energy efficiency in high-performance computing (HPC). It all started with the relocation of Shearwater’s HPC infrastructure from the UK to Iceland, where atNorth’s ICE02 data center is located.
The results of this initiative speak for themselves, including an 85% cost reduction and a 92% decrease in CO2 emissions. Additionally, these efforts were recognized earlier this month when Shearwater was awarded the HPCwire Readers' Choice Award for Top Energy Efficient HPC Achievements.
Due to the rising global cost of energy, the necessity to comply with new carbon footprint laws, and the drive to implement more sustainable measures in all forms of business, Shearwater looked for new ways to limit its environmental footprint and contribute sustainably.
The basis of this initiative is a common mission to adopt a sustainable approach to technology. With the cooling technologies and 100% renewable energy at atNorth’s Icelandic data centers, atNorth is truly setting the standard for sustainable HPC solutions.
“We can decarbonize our compute while achieving cost savings and operational excellence thanks to our partnership with atNorth," stated Nick Riddalls, Shearwater's Hemispheric Head of Processing.
Shearwater advances vessel decarbonization with engine tune-up
This kind of collaboration aligns more broadly with Shearwater’s overarching sustainability objectives, as shown by recent initiatives in decarbonizing our marine operations.
In August, Shearwater’s SW Amazon vessel underwent dramatic upgrades to its engine technology, including essential tune-ups that play a vital part in reducing the emissions of operations and creating a more efficient vessel.
Undergoing these vessel upgrades showcases Shearwater’s commitment to sustainable and efficient operations across its computing and marine operations.
Shearwater and atNorth have demonstrated that there is always room for improvement in elevating and managing technology more sustainably. These kinds of initiatives at Shearwater are prime examples of how technology and sustainability can go hand-in-hand.
