GOT HERE

When the companies that later became Shearwater were founded, the science of seismology didn’t even exist. Now, following decades of technological innovation, plus the gathering together of world-leading expertise through mergers and acquisitions, we're a leading player in the field.

When it looked like the world was pulling back from offshore exploration of conventional energy, Shearwater doubled down on its investment. We could see that energy security, and the demand for carbon capture, meant the seabed would continue to play a major role in decarbonising the planet.

We have become a significant business through this bold approach to both innovation in technology and operational practice. That pioneering spirit continues.

Technological innovation has always been key to solving the industry’s challenges and we believe it will continue to be so. It’s how we meet the needs of our clients and provide them with great value seismological research.
We innovate across the entire seismic process, from sensor to image, and hold over 240 patents. That’s made possible by having our own in-house R&D and manufacturing capability – the only company in the sector to do so. By looking after the entire system we position ourselves to break through the quality and cost curves that our industry needs.

It takes great ingenuity to design underwater sensors that can collect accurate information about the seabed and the rock beneath it. So we design nodes that sit on the ocean floor and sensors that can be towed from vessels at its surface. We turn that data into 2D and 3D imaging and develop interpretative tools. We can map data over time – 4D imaging – to reveal and predict changes in reservoir behaviour.
All this innovation enables customers to understand the secrets of the ocean floor, reducing commercial risk and helping them make better decisions. The discoveries they then make improve the energy security for all of us as the world transitions away from fossil fuels and decarbonises.
