Focus Filip’s Experience As An Intern At Shearwater

1 Sep 2023

Story from Filip, Internship in Mechanical EngineeringOslo - June 2023 – August 2023

At school I always liked subjects like math, science, physics etc, and that’s why I wanted to become an engineer. However, I have always wondered what exactly an engineer does, I reckon they don’t calculate math questions all day, so what do they do?  This curiosity fueled my desire to study mechanical engineering at NTNU in Trondheim.

My internship at Shearwater provided me with an insight in what engineers do and some inspiration for what I want to do further in my career. There are engineers of all sorts working at Shearwater and they are all eager to share their knowledge and expertise, inspiring me to chart my own future in the field.

For me, one of the most rewarding things as an engineer is to see your creation in real life. Too feel and see the thing you have been calculating, dimensioning and twisting your brain inside and out to get it right. At Shearwater I had the chance to work with a project that could potentially be used commercially, which gave me great motivation.

My task here at Shearwater was interesting and at a good balance of needing to learn new skills and applying the knowledge I gained at university. The work was mostly independent, but there was a supporting environment, and help was always available when needed. The tasks I worked on were not mere student exercises, but meaningful with real life challenges. It gave me a great opportunity to learn new skills, while solving, or at least trying to solve engineering challenges. At the same time having to dig up some knowledge from lectures I had completely forgotten.

I was also encouraged to explore my creativity in my work which makes work a lot more fun. There were little boundaries in my task, and lots of room for personal interpretation. You even get to hold a presentation for the entire office to share your progress and solutions at the end of the internship!

Overall, my internship at Shearwater not only strengthened my liking for engineering but provided me with valuable experiences and skills that will undoubtedly shape my future career path.
